Managing Director of Roxel UK

After graduating in physics, Mark started his career as a research scientist with the UK Atomic Energy Authority, majoring in the study of space radiation effects on electronics. Mark has spent the majority of his career working in the defence industry, within BAe Dynamics, Matra BAe Dynamics and then MBDA. His experience includes electronic technology development, manufacturing process development & JIT manufacturing systems, production management, programme management and Sales and Marketing. Senior roles included Project Manager for the ASRAAM missile system, Sector Head for Air Systems and Sales lead in the joint MoD/MBDA Team Complex Weapons Portfolio Team.

Mark was appointed Roxel Group Programmes Director and UK Managing Director from the 1st January 2014. He is a member of the IExpE and Chairman of the joint industry and government UK energetics Sector Skills Strategy Group (SSSG), and is an active member of the European Association for Study of Safety in production and use of Propellants (EASSP).

Following a review of the published literature, this paper will discuss the key factors commonly attributed to achieving a successful safety culture, particularly in organisations operating in major hazard environments. The author will then outline and discuss the approach being deployed in Roxel UK, including the benefits that Roxel has experienced through engaging in a variety of safety related forums. The paper will describe the challenges and successes that have occurred as part of Roxel’s continuing journey. Finally, the author will present his personal view of the lessons that have been learned along that journey.
